This Is The CFCL

I will admit what follows does not put the CFCL in a class all by itself, but it speaks VOLUMES to the kind of owners we are fortunate to have participate each year.  Each owner makes sacrifices from spending time away from their young children all day on a weekend day, to adjusting their work schedule to attend the draft to making annual travel arrangements to make sure they come into town on Draft Day.

The Twin Killers (California), Beatniks (Iowa - gateway to Nebraska), Ruffins (North Carolina) and Kenndoza Line (Ohio) all put together travel arrangements to make sure they can participate live at the draft and then scurry back to their part of the country to get back to work and school on time the following Monday.

This year, the Kenndoza Line is adding an additional challenge by going out of the country on a family vacation the week before the draft.

After posting a reminder at our Front Office about some deadlines for Roster Cut Day and Draft Day, there was this response from Kenn:

So...March 23 I will be overseas.
Know - as I'm sure you already do - that I will still not be the last to send in my keeper list. When I arrive (in the Bahamas) on March 22, one of my first items of business will be making sure I have internet access. Apparently it's going to be ridiculously expensive. The amount spent on internet the week before the draft, the hotel the weekend of the draft, and gas to/from the draft (I'm driving, not flying this year) will far exceed whatever I might be lucky enough to win. I guess I like this league.
See you 53 days.

Finishing in the first division 70% of the time for the past 10 years certainly could enhance his "liking" of the league.  But this attitude, held in its own way by each owner of the CFCL, is what makes this league so damn special and so much fun to be a part of.

Anatomy of a Pennant Race (Part 1)

It may not surprise you to hear that over the course of 29 complete seasons the CFCL has seen some amazing pennant races.  I'm sure every league has had them.  But just in the last four years we have seen three amazing races, each quite different than the other.

2012 - Candy Colored Clowns hold a commanding 15-20 point lead over the league around the trade deadline.  Dem Rebels decide to try to make things interesting and make a few deals at the deadline.  As late as the end of August the Clowns still held a 20 point lead over the Rebels.  And then September happens.  And the Rebels are coming, and they keep coming and they make the Clowns sweat.  When the final out was recorded for the season, the Clowns had their first CFCL title, finishing 1 point ahead of Dem Rebels.

2011 - A year that will live in infamy in the Revenge historical archives.  Four teams finished within four and a half points of each other.  Going into the final week the DoorMatts, Ruffins, Revenge and Kenndoza Line all had legitimate opportunity to take home the Copperfield Trophy.  With about six days left in the season the Ruffins, in third or fourth place, even sent out a concession e-mail wishing the other three owners well in their pursuit of the pinnacle.  When it looked like the Revenge would take their first championship to the mantle, tragedy struck in the name of Brad Lincoln and the Ruffins scooted past the scrum to finish 1.5 points ahead of the Kenndoza Line.

2010 -   Perhaps the most amazing race ever.  The Kenndoza Line and DoorMatts were neck and neck.  To make matter more hectic, perennial champion Copperfields were hovering just a few points back.  It came down to the last day.  It came down to the last game.  It came down to the last inning.  After the final pitch we had a flatfooted tie, Kenndoza Line 79 - DoorMatts 79.  The Line owned the tie-breaker, denying the DoorMatts their first ever title.

2013 is shaping up much the same way.  But not just for the championship.  There is a lot of drama for ALL the positions.  Today and tomorrow we will look at each "race".  First - teams 6-10.

STANDINGS AS OF 9/11/13

6.  Eukennott Beatniks  48
7.  Dem Rebels  48
8.  Stranger Danger  46
9.  Morkertzuma's Revenge  44
10.  Twin  Killers  35

In the following matchups, I have only identified if the team lower in the standings can catch the team directly above them by either gaining points or having the higher team lose points.  If you want to see a comprehensive view of the standings, click here.

Twin Killers  VS.  Revenge  [Nine points separate them]
The Killers can conservatively gain 1 point in Runs, 1 OBP, 2 WHiP, 2 K/BB for a total of 6.
The Revenge could potentially lose 1 SB, 1 OBP, 1 ERA, 1 WHiP, 1 QS, 2 K/BB for a total of 7.
Thirteen point swing with a nine point difference.  Killers could move up.

Revenge VS Danger [Two points separate them]
Before we get to the analysis, let's be reminded that the Revenge are trying to pass a team WHOSE OWNER DIDN'T SHOW UP TO THE DRAFT; WHOSE PROXY LEFT THE DRAFT EARLY; WHO HAD TO COMPLETE HIS RESERVE ROSTER TWO FULL DAYS AFTER THE COMPLETION OF THE DRAFT!!!!
Revenge can gain 1 RBI, 1 OBP, 1 TB, 2 WHiP for a total of 5.
Danger can lose 1 SB for a total of 1.
Six point swing with a two point difference.  Revenge could move up.

Danger VS Dem Rebels [Two points separate them]
Before we get to the analysis, let's be reminded that the Rebels are trying to stay ahead of a team WHOSE OWNER DIDN'T SHOW UP TO THE DRAFT; WHOSE PROXY LEFT THE DRAFT EARLY; WHO HAD TO COMPLETE HIS RESERVE ROSTER TWO FULL DAYS AFTER THE COMPLETION OF THE DRAFT!!!!
Danger can gain 1 OBP, 1 QS for a total of 2.
Dem Rebels can lose 1 R, 2 OBP, 2 WHiP, 2 K/BB for a total of 7.
Nine point swing with a two point difference.  Danger could move up.

Dem Rebels VS Beatniks [0 points separate them]
I show the Rebels as the pursuers of the Beatniks, despite the tie in points because the Beatniks have been ahead all season long.  Simply throwing a bone to the 'Niks.  They've had a tough season.
Dem Rebels can gain 1 SB, 1 K/BB for a total of 2.
Beatniks can lose 1 SB, 1 OBP, 2 WHiP, 1 QS, 1 K/BB for a total of 6.
Eight point swing with no point difference.  Dem Rebels could move up.

Teams 1-5 tomorrow.  Stay tuned.

CFCL: Past Meets Present

Thanks to the organizational efforts of Matt Grage (owner of Graging Bulls), the CFCL had their first in-season get together in over a decade.  Matt coordinated an outing to Geneva to watch Cubs Single A affiliate Kane County Cougars take on the Cedar Rapids Kernels.  There was a little of everything in the game.  An elderly fan was taken to the hospital after being hit in the face by a foul ball.  A batter for the Kernels and the Cougars shortstop collided knee-to-head during a t-ballesque play of Merry Go Round.  Adam Walker, rightfielder for the Kernels, hit a herculean homerun to dead center that cleared, not only the fence, but the 20 foot tall black wall behind the fence.  Oh, and there was a celebrity siting (picture below).  Speaking of pictures, here are some of the motley crew that camped out behind homeplate.

Pictured from left:  Mike Bentel (Twin Killers), Matt Bentel (Twin Killers Behind The Scenes Man), Matt Bentel (DoorMatts), Rich Bentel (Dem Rebels), Paul Zeledon (Da Paul Meisters), Tim Morkert (Morkertzuma's Revenge), David Mahlan (David's Copperfields), Mike Coulter (Candy Colored Clowns), Matt Grage (Graging Bulls), Junior Mr. Coulter (Player Acquisition Influence for the Candy Colored Clowns).

Bentel Triumverate talking baseball strategy . . . or where to go for dinner that night.

Owners of the Bulls and Clowns strategizing on how they both can end up in first.

Matt and Tim, based on the expressions, obviously talking
about the Commissioner.  "What?  We're just sitting here."

Even though the Cougars put a lot of runners on base and consistently found ways not to score, the game was exciting.  And then around the 8th inning I looked over to the right and noticed a guy signing a baseball for a fan.

It's the guy in the blue shirt.  I blurted out who I thought it was (guessed correctly), then I turned and asked the rest of the owners, "Who is that signing an autograph?"  Without even looking where I pointed out, Paul immediately said "Is it Carlos May?!"  The rest of the owners looked over and eventually we all agreed (and were proven right) it was Moises Alou, former Cubs rightfielder.  Funny that a former Cub All-Star was about fifty feet from us and no one got up to take his picture (other than the one I snapped here since I knew I was writing this blog) or get his autograph.  Based on the comments of the owners, we're all still pissed about his reaction in the 8th inning of Game 6 in the 2003 NLCS.

As the Coulters headed out for the day and handshakes were passed around, Mike said "Good seeing you guys!  Let's do this again next year."  Which actually is a pretty good idea.

Meet the Twin Killers

Mike Bentel is one of those lucky guys, along with his brother, to be born on August 8th.  If fact, they were born one year, to the day, after lights went on at Wrigley Field.  If that doesn't make you feel old . . .

The Twin Killers began their 4th season in the CFCL in 2013.  As he mentioned below, each year has been a progression of improvement with 2012 being their high watermark so far - a sixth place finish.

In addition to running a fantasy baseball team, Mike is a highly successful college student who will be leaving for California in the next few weeks to take advantage of a scholarship offered by The University of California in their engineering program.  Actually Mike received two scholarship offers from California institutions of higher education.  We have received assurances, however, that even though he's pursuing an advanced degree, that won't jeopardize his involvement with the CFCL.

Upon graduating from UIC this spring, he and his family took in a White Sox game after the graduation ceremonies.  Mike was greeted with this on the Jumbotron:

When Mike joined the CFCL he provided us with his team profile.  And now he's provided us with answers to deep, probing questions.  It's time to meet the Twin Killers.

1) You joined the CFCL in 2010 with your brother Matt. What brought you to the CFCL?

I first became acclimated with the league when I was young, maybe ten years old, and Dad would get in the mail standings of his "fantasy league team". At this point, I had no idea what that was, I had only been following baseball for a year, maybe two. But, I enjoyed seeing how my Dad ranked against the other guys and their quirky team names. When I joined, I knew the league was looking to fill a spot since an owner was quitting. Dad and I had tossed around the idea before, but this seemed to be the perfect time to do it. It only seemed natural to get my more National League-inclined twin brother, who has been following the Cubs as long as I had the Sox and the American League.

2) You and Matt started as co-owners, but be honest – you’re the brains behind the outfit, right?

Though Matt and I are co-owners, I am both GM and coach at the moment. I scout all the players, make decisions on who to draft, and during the year I set up the beleaguered line-up and unfortunate pitching staff. Though Matt has helped in the past in a couple of scouting situations and draft-day situations, the Killers look to see him take a more substantial role as I move out West to California.

3) Isn’t he holding the Killers back from their true potential?

As much as I'd like to blame the Killers second-division finishes in their short-lived career on my brother, that blame unfortunately lies on me. However, the team every year has been getting better (or, well at least not worse), and we're looking forward to a first-division finish this year, and hopefully with a little more involvement from the brother, especially on scouting, I feel the Killers may have a shot at the top three.

4) What has it been like competing against your dad and cousin?

Though not everyone has the pleasure to compete against people they've known for a while, as well as having a vast knowledge of baseball, I fortunately do. It has been great, as well as making the transition into the league, especially being the youngest by a number of years, a little easier. I enjoy giving Dad a hard time any chance I get (though he has always finished better than me, so far), and when I get the chance to see Rich, it always makes for great conversation. I'm just waiting for the day I can brag that I beat both of them, and the rest of the league.

5) What has your experience in the league been like compared to what you anticipated?

To be honest, I am not sure exactly what I had anticipated before the league, but if I had to guess, I am sure I thought it was a bunch of nerdy white guys who enjoyed to sit around a table once a year and draft a team given fake salaries, real stats, and everything else that would go into being a real GM in baseball (save for a couple of stipulations, given the league). However, it turns out its just a bunch of baseball-nerdy white guys who enjoy to sit around a table once a year and draft a team, and I must say that I fit right in with them. Now, if only I can gain their experience quick enough to beat them...

6) The first two years you were in the league you finished ninth. Last year you moved up to 6th. Is this part of a traditional five year plan?

It's playing right into my plan, where I finish 3rd this year and first next year (the pattern isn't exactly there, but its close). In all seriousness, it was a little disheartening when the Killers finished 9th back-to-back seasons. If anything, especially early on, you'd like to see some improvement. But, I will say after every year I realize something else that helps better my team the following year. Finishing 6th was great, and if I recall correctly 5th was in reach, but I knew the team would really have to pull it together. Luckily, the plan (and, no not the 5-year plan) seems to be working. The team is in the thick of it, and given no major moves are made and no injuries, I think we will end up finishing higher than 6th, which will keep the steady improvement the Killers like to see.

7) How do define whether the Killers had a successful year?

The way I know the Killers has a successful year does not fall on any one metric, but if I had to choose the best one, it would be finishing better or the same place as the year before, obviously. But, taking a deeper look, I know I did well as an owner when I can look back on the team from draft day until the last day of the season and notice I didn't draft one of the worst players in the league (Lincecum '12), and directly opposite of that, make a good bid on an undervalued player that worked out (Pagan '11), that I made at least one good trade throughout the season (Harvey '12), and hopefully sprinkle in a good cheap pick-up during the season (Morse '11 for $0.05). That way I can tell the whole season wasn't a bust, there were positives and something to build on for next year.

The Owners of the CFCL 2010

Pictured from left: Mike Coulter (Candy Colored Clowns), Bob Boryca (Mo's Red Hots), Tim Morkert (Morkertzuma's Revenge), Rich Bentel (Dem Rebels), Matt Grage (Graging Bulls), Dave Holian [kneeling and eventual 2010 CFCL Champion] (David's Ruffins), Matt Bentel (DoorMatts), Mike Bentel (Twin Killers), David Mahlan (David's Copperfields), Kenn Ruby (Kenndoza Line).

This was an interesting year.  It was to be the end of an era as Original Six Owner, League Founder, Co-Commissioner, League Historian, League Secretary and eleven time champion David Mahlan would retire at the end of the season.

It was the first of two years that we had to scramble for a draft location.  Bob Boryca came through big time, finding a room for us to draft in at Plainfield North High School.  Interestingly, in those two non-coporate room drafting environments, the Ruffins laid the groundwork to capture back-to-back titles.

This was also the first year for the Twin Killers.  With Mike joining the league, the CFCL was comprised of 30% Bentels, still well behind the CFCL record of 50% saturation the Mahlans achieved in 1984.

The Owners of the CFCL 2011

Well the CFCL went down to Naperville
We were lookin’ for a room to use
We were in a bind ‘cause we were way behind
And we sure didn’t have much to choose.

When we came across this young man
Sittin’ at the computer and playin’ it hot
And the Ruffins jumped up on a hickory stump
And said, “Boys, let me tell you what”

“You probably didn’t know it
But I’m a fantasy player too
And if you go to draft below
I’ll make a deal with you.”

And so in 2011, for the second year in a row our normal corporate digs were not available and the Ruffins came to the rescue.  They provided a room in the basement of a Naperville office building.  The room wasn’t real conducive for photo taking so we stepped out in the hallway for our close up.

From left: Rich Bentel (Dem Rebels), Bob Boryca (Mo’s Red Hots), Dave Holian (David’s Ruffins), Tim Morkert (Morkertzuma’s Revenge), Scott Strang (Stranger Danger), Matt Grage (Graging Bulls), Dan Strang (Assistant GM Stranger Danger), Matt Bentel (DoorMatts), Mike Bentel (Twin Killers), Jeff Ruby (brother of Kenn and proxy for Kenndoza Line), Mike Coulter (Candy Colored Clowns).

The Ruffins used the home field advantage to perfection as they defended their title and grabbed their 4th overall championship.  Little did we know at the time that this would be the last year we would draft with Bob (Red Hots). He would resign at the end of the year.  Kenn Ruby couldn’t make it up from Cincinnati due to the recent birth of his second child, but DunKenn made it with Kenn’s brother Jeff who proved to be an amazing proxy, handling the bidding and tracking of players while a cell phone was glued to his ear all afternoon so Kenn would know what was happening.

We also welcomed Stranger Danger to the CFCL as they took over the league’s most successful franchise (David’s Copperfields, who resigned at the end of 2010).

The Owners of the CFCL - 2012

This is a new weekly feature as we walk backwards to the beginning.  You've seen the Big Uglies from 2013.  Each week we'll step back one year and meet the ownership.  The cool thing here is that when the picture was taken we didn't know what we were facing for the year.  But now we can look at the picture knowing who won, what happened during the year, etc.

Here are the owners for 2012 drafting in Lisle, IL.

Pictured left to right:  Rich Bentel (Dem Rebels, in A's hat), Dave Holian (David's Ruffins), Matt Bentel (DoorMatts), Mike Bentel (Twin Killers), Matt Grage (Graging Bulls), Kenn Ruby (Kenndoza Line), Scott Strang (Stranger Danger), Nick Hansen (Eukennott Beatniks), Mike Coulter (Candy Colored Clowns and eventual 2012 Champion), Tim Morkert (Morkertzuma's Revenge).

Two interesting things heading in to 2012.  First we were welcoming back an old friend.  Nick Hansen rejoined the league after a much too long three year hiatus.  Secondly Dem Rebels and the Clowns engaged in one of the craziest pennant chases in CFCL history.  Both made significant trades right at the trade deadline and then watched as the Rebels, down 21 points in late August made a charge that left them one point short of catching the Clowns.  Going into the final day, it was possible for Dem Rebels to gain one point, thus tying the Clowns.  But the Clowns held the tie-breaker edge so they were in strong position going in to the final day, due in large part to their management of their team throughout the year.

Notice also that the DoorMatts seem to be staring someone down.  My guess is it's everyone but Nick since everyone in the direction Matt is looking at finished ahead of him in the standings.

Meet The 2013 CFCL Owners

Here are the ten heartbeats of the CFCL.  This solid core allow me to fully state with utmost confidence "30 Years of the CFCL!  (We're Not Even Halfway There!)"

Left to right we have:  Matt Grage (Owner of Graging Bulls); Tim Morkert (Morkertzuma's Revenge); Nick Hansen (Eukennott Beatniks); Rich Bentel (Dem Rebels); Mike Bentel (Twin Killers); Matt Bentel (DoorMatts); Dan Strang (sitting in for his brother, Scott Strang - Stranger Danger); Kenn Ruby (Kenndoza Line); and last year's champion Mike Coulter (Candy Colored Clowns).  [Not pictured Dave Holian (David's Ruffins); Dave drafted via cellphone connection and with the awesome assistance of former CFCL owner and League Founder, David Mahlan]
