This Week in CFCL History

TS Eliot will tell you that April is the cruelest month, but if you’re the bloke in charge of recording and processing transactions in the CFCL, the cruelest month may well be July.

As we noted in yesterday’s post about the CFCL trading deadline, more trades are made during July as teams scramble to position their teams appropriately before trading is frozen for the rest of the season. And it’s not just the number of trades, but the sheer size of the deals completed in July is often mind boggling.

Because of the vast number of players changing hands, these “This Week…” posts will be a bit different in July. I’ll still list all the deals and other milestones that occurred during the week, but rather than do a full analysis of each deal, we’ll do separate posts taking a look at the trading deadline winners and losers for each year.

So to get started, here’s a look at this week in CFCL history, covering the dates June 30 to July 6.

June 30, 1992 SIX PACKS trade Omar Oliveras to LAMBCHOPS for Daryl Boston.
June 30, 1992 LAMBCHOPS trade Archi Cianfrocco to KENTS for Jose Offerman.
June 30, 2005 RUFFINS trade Ryan Church, Craig Wilson, Anthony Reyes, and their 3rd round Rotation Draft pick in 2006 to LAMBCHOPS for Pat Burrell, Corey Patterson, and Josh Fogg.

The Copperfields pick up some infield help in Boone and Morris on their way to the 2001 CFCL Championship, while the Lambchops acquire some scraps for rebuilding. Maybe the Chops should have hung onto the 18-year-old minor leaguer playing A ball for the Kane County Cougars. Miguel Cabrera and his .02 salary formed centerpiece of the Copperfields offense for years to come.
July 4, 1989 COPPERFIELDS trade Herm Winningham to LAMBCHOPS for Kelly Downs.
July 4, 1989 COPPERFIELDS trade Ricky Jordan, Randy Myers, Alejandro Pena, Craig Lefferts, Ron Gant, Kelly Downs, and their 1st round Minor League Draft pick in 1990 to BALD EAGLES for Eddie Murray, Tim Leary, Bruce Hurst, and Todd Worrell.

Unfortunately this was Pedro A. Martinez, not super stud pitcher Pedro J. Martinez.
